Itinerary

Amazing tour to Landmannalaugar a geothermal area of Iceland with a colorful and breathtaking landscape of mountains, lava fields and hot springs.

DAY 1 - 24.06.2020
08:30 – 09:15 – Pick up at hotel/guest house
10:00 -10:30 – Arrive at location where we have a coffee and the horses are selected based on individual rider’s experience
11:30 – We start out tour by riding up into the highlands and enjoy its beautiful scenery. The ride is about 6 hours (40km) with breaks for riders and horses.
18:00 -19:00 – Arrive at Hólaskógur cottage, traditional Icelandic dinner
DAY 2 - 25.06.2020
08:30 – Breakfast
10:30 – We leave Hólaskógur and we continue our ride across the river Þjórsá, the longest river in Iceland. Riding on the lava fields way witch goes beside 1074 m high Mt. Löðmundur. Our herd of freely running horses will let you remember that day.
18:00 – Landmannahellir located by the high mountains is gone be our accommodation for this night, a cabin where farmers stay while gathering sheep in the mountains.

DAY 3 - 26.06.2020
08:30 – Breakfast
11:00 – We ride from Landmannahellir to Landmannalaugar which is the top of our tour. We ride through the valley Domadal passing Frostastadarvatn lake. We stay there for a while in Landmannalaugar, take a walk around and bath in a hot spring. After that we continue our ride on riding patches and roads from mixed lava and soft sand.
18:00-19:00 – Back at Landmannahellir where we spend a next night

DAY 4 - 27.06.2020
08:30 – Breakfast
11:00 –Start our riding close to Hekla volcano The mythical entrance to Hell and meeting place of witches (last eruption in 2000) with beautiful views on Mt.Vallafell. Mountain views, beautiful landscape and lave fields, crossing deserts of ash with our freely running horses.
19:00 – Coming to Hólaskógur cabin
20:00 – Grilled dinner
DAY 5 - 28.06.2020
08:30 – Breakfast
10:30 – Start our riding which is 6-7 hours (ca. 40 km) through wonderful landscape with sands, mountains, Gjáin – most romantic place in Iceland, rivers and Icelandic forest (you can’t miss that one) nice riding paths which are used by Icelandic farmers to gather the sheep in autumn.
17:30 – Back to the village where we´ll have light dinner.
17:30 – Departure and arriving at your hotel/guest house around 19:30 – 20:00 o’clock.

DAY 1
6.30 - 7.30 Departure from pick up points in Reykjavik www.busstop.is to the Domestic Airport for the flight to Húsavík and transfer to Bjarnastaðir Farm
Please dress already in riding clothes and bring your passport or other identification for your domestic flight.
12.00 at Bjarnastaðir, we have lunch and start our ride with a short introduction to the Icelandic horse and its special gaits.
13.00 on the horse! We start our ride on the east side of the National Park Jökulsárgljúfur
16.00 we leave the horses and have a sightseeing tour by bus to Europe’s largest waterfall, Dettifoss, and the famous Ásbyrgi Canyon, one of the wonders of nature, a wide, horseshoe-shaped canyon with sheer cliff faces up to 100 m high.
19.00 a traditional Icelandic dinner at Bjarnastaðir Farm (approx. 20 km)
20.00 riders’ integration and free time
DAY 2

10.00 we drive to Kelduhverfi and start our ride from there. We ride into the mountains and see a magical landscape over Öxafjörður Fjord
14.00 picnic lunch at the geothermal area of Theistareykir
18.00 arrival at Theistareykir Mountain Cabin (overnight stay) (approx. 35 km)

Our ride takes us through a black sand desert along the colorful Laxárdalur valley with the glittering Salmon River Laxá

17.00 a nice hot bath in Jarðböðin, an outdoor lagoon with geothermal water

We set out through Geldingadalur Valley and Reykjaheiði heath 14.00 lunch break at the Tungufellsdalur valley. At one point we will practically cross over from one continental plate to another as we ride over the Mid-Atlantic Ridge!

16.00 ride to Öxarfjörður Fjord
19.00 hearty dinner at Bjarnastaðir farm with the hot outdoor tub waiting for you (approx. 40 km)

10.00 return to Húsavík by bus and a whale-watching cruise for those interested. (Price per person EUR 80) Others can enjoy the town‘s swimming pool with its hot tubs or just go for a stroll in this beautiful town.

Golden Circle

What better or more unique way to do the popular Golden Circle Tour than by riding through the lovely countryside of South Iceland. The key attractions on this classic tour are the hot spring area of Geysir, Gullfoss or the Golden Waterfall. Each one guaranteed to take your breath away.

DAY 1
18.00 - pick up at BSÍ Bus station in Reykjavik where our bus will transfer you and your fellow riders to Blesastaðir Guesthouse

10.00 - an introduction to the Icelandic horse and its special gaits
11.00 - on the horse! We start our ride along the pleasant trail at Thjórsá glacier fed river.
16.00 - we leave the horses at Sandlækjarmýri field and drive to Blesastaðir Guesthouse. This day is the perfect start to get to know your horse and the Icelandic way of trail riding in a relaxed atmosphere.
17.00 - enjoy the outdoor hot tub

DAY 3

Start our riding which is about 6 hours (ca.30-35 km) on good riding paths to the fertile farmlands of neighbouring community Hrunamannahreppur. We drive spare horses along in a free running herd, enabling us to change our mount regularly and traveling at a brisk space.
14.00 - arrival at Hrunaréttir for picnic lunch
18.00 - arrival at Brúarhlöð (accommodation at Myrkholt Farm)

We continue our ride on soft trails ideal for tölting, alongside Hvítá River we follow the ever deepening canyon on to the impressive Golden Waterfall Gullfoss.

15.00 - ride back to Myrkholt
17.30 - arrival at the Myrkholt Farm (distance covered ca. 20km)

DAY 5

Our ride takes us through Haukadalur valley with its beautiful birch forest. Cross clear little streams on the way and enjoy the rich vegetation of wild mountain flowers that bloom during high summer.

15.00 - free time at the countless bubbling hot springs
17.30 - arrival at the Myrkholt Farm (distance covered ca. 20km)

We leave the Geysir area and ride along green pastures back to the bridge at Brúarhlöð canyon where we cross mighty Hvítá River

18.00 - arrival at the Blesastaðir Guesthouse (distance covered ca. 30km)

DAY 1
08:30-08:45 – Pick up at hotel/guest house
10:00-10:15 – Arrival to location in our village where we have a nice coffee and the horses are selected based on individual rider’s experience.
11:30 – We start our tour by riding with the river Þjórsá up into the highlands and enjoy its beautiful scenery. The ride is about 6-7 hours (ca.35 km) with breaks for riders and horses.
18:30-19:00 – Arrival at Klettur cottage (sleeping bag accommodation without electricity and showers) and having a traditional Icelandic dinner (lamb leg “in the hole”)
Evening – Free time
DAY 2
08:30 – Breakfast
11:00 – Start our riding which is about 6 hours (ca.30-35 km) on good riding paths surrounded by beautiful mountains, waterfalls and the Pearls of Nature (Gjáin, Stöng)
15:00- Arrive to Hólaskógur for a good lunch for hungry riders and a break.
16:30 – Free ride up to 2nd highest waterfall in Iceland – Háifoss (122m)
18:00-19:00 – We arrive at Hólaskógur which will be our accommodation for the night (electricity, showers)
19:00- Grill dinner (Icelandic lamb and beef)
DAY 3
08:30 – Breakfast
10:00 – Start our riding which is around 7 hours (ca. 35-40 km) through wonderful landscape with sands, mountains, rivers and Icelandic forest (you can’t miss that one) nice riding paths which are used by Icelandic farmers to gather the sheep in autumn; checking out waterfall – Hjálpafoss.
17:00 – Arrive to the village where we have Icelandic meat sup and coffee, say goodbye
18:00 – Departure and arriving at your hotel/guest house around 19:30 – 20:00 o’clock.

Herding sheep – ‘Réttir’

09 - 12 September 2020

Itinerary

This tour is your opportunity to join a real Icelandic tradition. We will be riding in South of Iceland in an area called Þjórsárdalur. You will be part of the group of gathering sheep down to “Réttir” and select them as well. Here you can feel like a part of the Icelandic community and take part in an annual event every farmer waits for.

DAY 1 - 09.09.2020
9:00 – We will pick you up at place you stay in Reykjavik and drive to a village in South of Iceland to start our adventure. There we can have a look on tour schedule together and get to know each other.
11:00 – Icelandic lunch
12:00 – We will take a whole day of riding and visit interesting places in our area. 6 hours rides with breaks for riders and horses
20:00 – Icelandic traditional dinner
21:00 – Relax in hot tub and some free time
DAY 2 - 10.09.2020
8:30 – Breakfast
10:00 – We will ride up to the group and join them to run down sheep. We help to bring the sheep over to Þjórsádalur valley. It would be long day of riding with thousands of sheep
20:00 – 21:00 – Late arrival back for a nice Icelandic dinner
DAY 3 - 11.09.2020
6:00 – Early breakfast
07:00 – Starting our ride and gathering the sheep down to Skaftholtsréttir, after short break we will started to select the sheep. When ’Réttir’ is finish we will ride with our sheep back home.
19:00 – Icelandic traditional dinner
20:00 – Hot tub and maybe even northern lights if we are lucky. We spend nice evening together

Important information

THE PRICE INCLUDES:

  • Travel insurance including horse riding during whole trip.
  • Transportation from and to the stable, horses, saddles, saddle bags and sleeping bags (if needed), horse equipment, safety helmets, rain coats, meals/drinks, accommodation for the nights.
  • During the longer tours, all board is provided. A hearty breakfast, light lunch, on the break during a trip, and traditional Icelandic dinner after the ride. It is possible also to order a vegetable dinner if necessary.

Riders are required to bring warm clothes, good foot wear, towel, sleeping bag for the 3 days tour (it is possible to borrow).

CAUTION:

Riding gear (riding trousers, jackets, etc.) needs to be washed (40°C) or dry cleaned. Items which cannot be washed or dry cleaned (riding boots, riding hats) need to be disinfected at least five days prior to arriving in Iceland. The Icelandic Veterinary Authority recommends the broad-spectrum disinfectant Virkon S for disinfection. Used riding gloves, whips, saddles, bridles and other used leather gear may not be brought into the country.

Please understand that these precautions are necessary because there are no contagious animal diseases in Iceland. Horses are not vaccinated and are therefore susceptible to infectious agents from abroad. Please help us to protect Iceland’s fragile nature! DATES
The provided dates of the horse expeditions can be changed due to unfavourable weather conditions or any circumstances occurred regardless of Gallop Travel. The alternative dates will be then scheduled or money refund will be guaranteed.

If you cannot adjust your time timetable to our dates but you have few friends who ride with you, we can organize tailor-made trail for your team. Please contact us.

Horses Horses

The Icelandic horse is a breed of horse developed in Iceland. Although the horses are small, at times pony-sized, they are long-lived and hardy. The Icelandic displays two gaits in addition to the typical walk, trot, and canter/gallop commonly displayed by other breeds.

Most of the excursions are for all level of experience riders, however the trip “Wild Beauty of Iceland” is for only experienced and very experienced riders.

Horses Accomodation

During the entire expedition you’ll have a chance to see many monuments of nature and beautiful landscapes of southern Iceland. We are going to use trails which are dedicated for real Icelandic horsemen and farmers in Autumn to run up sheep back home and staying in a cottage where they usually sleep.
